MAGNIFICENT DESIGNS FOR “GROUND ZERO MOSQUE” UNVEILED

The developers of the Park51 Islamic cultural center in lower Manhattan have released renderings of the proposed structure, and they are fantastic. The drawings come from Soma Architects, one of several firms competing for the contract.

The building would feature a honeycomb style façade, interior walls and floors.

The interior shots are absolutely incredible, extremely fun and futuristic. The honeycomb structure of the walls and floors will doubtless make for amazing interior light and shadow effects.

In fact, there is something so unconventional about the look of the interior that it almost seems like a set from a science fiction movie. Which is to say it’s fucking awesome!

I haven’t seen a good shot of the honeycomb exterior yet, but my only complaint based on what I have seen is that the exterior looks at first glance like Swiss cheese, or like the bleached, dead remains of some giant sea creature.

I think the problem is two-fold. First the stark, white color of the façade as seen in the picture is too intense and overpowering.

Second, the picture of the façade is from a particularly unflattering angle.

I’m sure shots of the front of the building viewed straight on will show it in a better light.

Of course the conservative media – aka the voice of Idiot America, are already accusing the designers of being anti-Semitic. I guess it takes one to know one.

I hope this proposed design actually comes to fruition. It’s exactly what lower Manhattan needs – new construction that is innovative, modern and awe-inspiring.
